Free Snuggies Prevent Poor From Freezing to Death

snuggiesIt's a great day to be poor here in the United States! Homeless people are getting free houses and radio careers, while 100,000 food bank clients in New York are about to be the lucky (not to mention stylish) recipients of ... wait for it ... free Snuggies!

It sounds unbelievable, but really it's a dream come true for these people -- a New Year miracle, in fact! The Snuggie manufacturer, Allstar Products Group, has donated 100,000 of the infamous fleece blankets with sleeves to food banks around New York. Now, the only thing the clients have to worry about is which color they prefer -- pink or blue?

True, a real blanket or a real coat would perhaps be more useful than a robe you wear backwards. But this way the manufacturer gets a little free publicity out of the deal, the food bank clients are marginally warmer while they're reclining in their easy chairs or playing backgammon -- everybody wins!

I'm going to take a little break from the snark and admit that the food bank employees seem to be thrilled with the generous donation. Here's Tracie Nielsen, operations director for the food bank in Bellport, New York, talking about the donated Snuggies:

A lot of the homes are not properly prepared for the winter. A lot of them are struggling to keep up with prices of oil, so the heat is kept very low ... The kids think they're the coolest thing. And they can sleep in them. They can wrap up in them one way or another.

Well, don't I feel like a jerk.

Still, I can't help but wonder if it's appropriate to get all excited about blankets with sleeves when the people who use the food bank obviously need so much more.
