Sarah Palin & Other Political Book Authors: Who's the Greediest of Them All?

sarah palin book tourSarah Palin's book America By Heart hits stores today, and it's going to be a bestseller. Mark my words. But Palin isn't the only one who's got a book out just in time for those Black Friday sales. Barack Obama, Bill O'Reilly, George Bush, and other political authors are hoping to cash in during the gift-giving season, too.

So just what are they going to do with all that money they make?

Take a look.

america by heart

America By Heart, Reflections on Family, Faith, and the Flag, by Sarah Palin, $25.99

Who gets the money? Let's see, this is a woman who shirked her responsibilities as Governor of Alaska (for which she received a yearly salary of $125,000) to go on the lecture circuit (her estimated fee per speech is $100,000 and that's just part of what she does). Who do you think gets the money?

Verdict: Greedy

obama kids book

Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters, by Barack Obama, $17.99

Who gets the money? The President is donating his share of the profits to a scholarship program run by the Fisher House Foundation, which benefits the children of fallen and disabled service workers.

Verdict: Giving

pinheads and patriots

Pinheads and Patriots by Bill O'Reilly, $27.99

Who gets the money? When you buy the book on, a book gets sent to the troops, $2 will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project, and you'll also get a free tote.

Verdict: A little of both. The price is up there so O'Reilly can give to good causes and beef up his bank account at the same time.

decision points

Decision Points, by George W. Bush, $35 (cloth-bound, signed deluxe editions will go on sale November 30, for $350 each)

Who gets the money? Victims of Katrina? Nope. Afghan schoolgirls? Uh uh. Scholarships for the kids of the heroes who died in 9/11? Try again. The troops?! It must be the troops. Nope. As far as I can tell, all of the profits from Decision Points are going straight into W's pocket. But at least one socially minded bookstore, Green Apple, is donating 100 percent of its profits from sales of the book to a local Veteran's Hospital. (It figures that's the only way it will sell the book in its liberal neighborhood.)

Verdict: Greedy

dirty sexy politics

Dirty Sexy Politics by Meghan McCain, $23.99

Who gets the money? Meghan.

Verdict: Eh, she's young and just starting out so we'll give her a free pass on this one. After all, she did donate 1% of the proceeds from her book My Dad, John McCain to the Fallen Heroes Fund. (Of course, daddy was running for office at the time.)

glenn beck book

The Seven Wonders That Will Change Your Life by Glenn Beck, $24.99

Who gets the money? Poor Glenn Beck is actually going to miss the boat on the holiday sales since his forthcoming self-help book won't hit shelves until January 2011. There's no word on where the money is going yet, but all signs are pointing to the fact that Glenn is planning to "help" others suffering from addiction and depression with his words of wisdom, but has no intention of putting his money where his mouth is. C'mon Glenn, we can think of a few recovery centers that can use some dough.

Verdict: It may be too early to tell. But, oh hell, I'm going to say greedy. Prove me wrong, Glenn. Please.

If you had a lot of money and were about to make even more on a book, would you donate some of your profits to charity?
