Kevin Garnett & Other Athletes We Love to Hate

Kevin GarnettDetroit Pistons forward Charlie Villanueva tweeted that Kevin Garnett, forward for the Boston Celtics, said he looked like a "cancer patient" during Tuesday night's game.

Garnett said it was a miscommunication, and that he actually he told Villanueva that he was "cancerous to your team and our league" instead.

Uh huh ...

The good side of this is that it put alopecia universalis (an autoimmune skin disease that results in hair loss), which Villanueva has, in the spotlight. The cause of the disease is unknown, but it isn't life-threatening.

Nonetheless, the jab was definitely below the belt. Adrian Wojnarowsk, the NBA columnist at Yahoo!, calls Garnett a "needlessly vicious bully," and says he constantly goes after "smaller, younger players." He trash talks and takes cheap shots. He may be an amazing player who's fun to watch, but he isn't a nice guy.

Garnett isn't the only bad guy in the world of sports. Here's a list of other athletes we just love to hate.

Jose Canseco
Jose Canseco
Becoming quite a controversial guy after he retired, Canseco came out with the book Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball Got Big in 2005. In the book, he credits himself with introducing steroids to baseball, and said Mark McGwire, Jason Giambi, and Ivan Rodriguez, among others, used as well. And we all know what happened after that: Many big names admitted to using steroids, including McGwire, Manny Ramirez, and Alex Rodriguez (all of whom could be added to this list). Also, his first wife accused him of domestic violence and he tried to smuggle fertility drugs from Mexico.

Michael Vick

Michael Vick Between incidences involving marijuana, genital herpes, giving the finger to New Orleans Saints fans when he was booed, and of course, killing dogs, the current Philadelphia Eagles quarterback is used to making the headlines for the wrong reasons. Rape, murder, drugs -- nope, nothing got folks more irritated than seeing someone kill defenseless dogs. He may as well have been stomping on bunnies.

Tonya Harding
Tonya Harding
Ah, figure skating scandals. You remember: Harding's ex-husband and her bodyguard hired Shane Stant to break Nancy Kerrigan's right leg so that she would be unable to skate at the national championship. Harding went on to win, and both went to the Olympics, but no one really cares about that -- all anyone cared about was Harding's involvement in the scandal, with her appearing on the covers of Time and Newsweek in January 1994. Imagine the chaos had Twitter been around at that time?

Plaxico Burress
Plaxico Burress
According to the Associated Press, Burress has been sued at least nine times since he joined the NFL in 2000. Of course, nothing beats him going out to a club in NYC and bringing in a gun, feeling the gun slide down his leg, reaching to grab it, and shooting himself in the leg. He went to jail due to criminal possession of a handgun.

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods Thanksgiving will never be the same again. So many fans, who held Tiger on a pedestal as the best, most clean-cut athlete in the world, had their fantasy fall apart when it came out that he slept with almost every single porn star in the industry. He and his wife Elin divorced in August 2010, and he hasn't played the same since the scandal broke. This has been in the news enough, hasn't it? Let's move on.

Marion Jones

Marion Jones Everyone loved cheering for Jones during the Olympics. She won five medals during the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. But, oh wait, she had to give all of them back after admitting to using performance-enhancing drugs. She was also involved in a scandal regarding counterfeit checks, which led to charges against her coach and ex-boyfriend. Could she have won without the drugs? The world will never know.

LeBron James

LeBron James He may not be as disliked as Kobe Bryant, but James certainly has made more than his fair share of headlines in his young career. The way he handled his transition from the Cleveland Cavaliers to Miami Heat was so poor that the entire state most likely filed a restraining order against him. "The Decision" segment made an embarrassment of sports media -- the one-hour program was unnecessary, ridiculous, and stupid. He's also a Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees fan, which is unforgivable for most sports fans.
