10/10/10: The Meaning Behind Today's Big Non-Holiday

If you haven't checked the calendar yet, today is 10/10/10. That's the tenth day of the tenth month in the year two thousand and ten. October 10, 2010. Ooooh ... what must this mean? What kind of sign is this? Was this predicted in the Bible? Why am I starting to sound like Bear Vasquez from that Double Rainbow video ?

10/10/10 is really ... nothing. It's not a holiday, it doesn't mark anything other than the happenstance of three of the same numbers falling in sequence. No one got this excited when it was August 8, 2008. So why the big deal about three number tens?

Ten is an important number. Whenever we have an important list, we always include 10 things on it. An absolutely gorgeous perfect woman is a "10." So what do you get when you add three 10s together?

You get 30 ... but also a lot of other interesting associations, connections, theories, coincidences, and just funny observations about today being 10/10/10:

1. According to the Urban Dictionary, 101010 has two meanings: 1) Someone who spends too much time on the computer, and ...

2) A code used at the end of a web forum post that doesn't meet the required 10 characters. So I guess I'm a 101010.

3. It's Brett Favre's birthday! The Minnesota Vikings quarterback turns 41. Is it any coincidence that Favre is in the news for allegations he sent former sideline reporter Jenn Sterger sexts of his pee-pee -- the same Jenn Sterger who appeared in the 2006 edition of Playboy's Top Ten Party Schools? I think not ...

4. Organizations and charities have been jumping on 10/10/10 to promote events. The environmental group 350.org has dubbed the date Global Work Party to encourage everyone to do something that will help deal with global warming in their city or community.

5. It could have something to do with sex. Okay probably not. But by some ancient thought the 1 followed by 0 indicates the man and woman, and the joining of the two numbers the fertilization of an egg. Other meanings have it as the column and the circle, meaning the principle of the female and male, referring to the androgynous nature -- being at the same time male and female. I'm sure lots of people could have a field day with that.

6. It is referenced 244 times in the Bible. (It's used 8 times in the Koran.)

-- The 10 lepers healed by Jesus (the Gospel lesson read in Catholic churches today, coincidentally or not)

-- The 10 Commandments

-- The Holy Spirit descended on the Disciples 10 days after Jesus rose from the dead.

-- The 10 plagues of Egypt.

-- And many more ....

7. There's the numerology explanation. Noted numerologist Hans Decoz offers this (if you can make any sense out of it):

"What really sets this day apart is its multitude of 1s. Aggressive, confrontational, driven and strong-minded, the global energy for this day could be somewhat explosive. Add to that the fact that the 1 appears twice as a challenge or obstacle, and we can expect some troubles -- mainly in the form of unnecessary provocations and confrontations, hopefully more in the form of political bravado and grandstanding, and not in actual blood and bullets confrontations. Bloated egos with little or no common sense will unfortunately have the day. On October 10, we can expect some truly nasty examples of egotism."

Um, this doesn't sound so great. Should I be turning on the news or something?

8. It's a HUGE wedding day. Brides and grooms are rushing to chapels like crazy today. October is a great month to get married anyway. Now add the repeating numbers and you've got a memorable date as well. There are only 12 such dates like this (5-5-05; 7-7-07) every 1,000 years.

9. Ditto about scheduling Cesarean sections. If you wan't to fight that fight go here.

10. Perhaps the most famous story to come out of this date was that of George the Inmad, who had been deaf since birth. On 10/10/1910 at 10:10 p.m., he suddenly was able to hear with no explanation from the doctors. It was a medical mystery and the only conclusion they had was that he was very lucky. From then on, it is believed that you will have good luck if you touch your ears at 10:10 a.m. or p.m.

Damn, I missed the morning opportunity ... but just 7 hours and 8 minutes to go till my next shot at luck! I think I'm off to buy a lottery ticket.

How are you celebrating 10/10/10?
