Rick Sanchez Slammed: Stewart & Letterman Kicking a Man While He's Down?

jon stewartJon Stewart must have been prepping his Rick Sanchez response ever since Sanchez's anti-Semitic take-down of Stewart, and the media was unleashed on Stand-Up With Pete Dominick.

The comedian's big chance came this weekend at the event, Night of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Concert for Autism Education.

As Stewart asked for donations to the worthy cause, he slipped in his dig to the ex-CNN anchorman.

Stewart referenced the former CNN anchor’s infamous anti-Semitic comments: “If you went on radio and said the Jews control the media … you may want to hold on to your money.” He also joked that if Sanchez’ nasty remarks were in fact accurate, “All he has to do is apologize to us, and we’ll hire him back.”

Hilarious? Yes. Necessary?

David Letterman also jumped into the fray, when he popped up late into the benefit claiming he was just "helping Rick Sanchez clean out his office."

The guy was fired, is that enough without repeated public humiliation?

Sanchez should have been shown the door. His ignorance is damaging to all people -- not only the group he singled out. CNN did the right thing by showing zero tolerance for his wildly inappropriate remarks. Hopefully Sanchez learned a lesson, and others who come after will see that being a bigot is not acceptable.

But should we pile on? It's over, Sanchez is finished. But he's no Mel Gibson. (Even though the two share some disgusting views.) I'm sure he's sitting at home right now, stunned at the aftermath of his bad judgment.

Should Jon Stewart and David Letterman have taken the high road?
