Jay Mariotti Arrested: Has Your Man Ever Been This Jealous?

Jay MariottiAfter an argument with his girlfriend early Saturday, renowned sports commentator Jay Mariotti was arrested on charges of alleged felony domestic assault. He has since been released on $50,000 bail.

According to reports, the incident began outside a nightclub in Santa Monica when Mariotti, a panelist on ESPN's Around the Horn, thought his girlfriend, whose name hasn't been released, was flirting with another man.

It began as a verbal argument, but quickly turned into more.

When police arrived at the couple's apartment, sources say the woman had cuts and bruises from Mariotti pushing and shoving her.

I understand being jealous; I understand the rage one can feel when they think someone they love has eyes for someone else. I don't understand how men like Mariotti or Mel Gibson or Chris Brown or millions of others (allegedly) let it escalate to levels like this.

Fortunately, I haven't ever been in such a situation, but many, many women have even if they never make headlines.

Here are some frightening and shocking statistics from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence:

  • One in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.
  • An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year.
  • 85% of domestic violence victims are women.
  • Females who are 20-24 years of age are at the greatest risk of nonfatal intimate partner violence.
  • Most cases of domestic violence are never reported to the police.

If you or anyone you know is being abused, there are plenty of resources that offer help, including the The National Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-799-7233.
