Gays, Drunks & Muslims at Ground Zero: What's the Punchline?

gay bar transvestiteFox News host Greg Gutfeld sees your controversy over a mosque at Ground Zero and raises you a controversy over a gay bar at a mosque at Ground Zero.

The "Red Eye" host wrote yesterday on his blog that he has spoken to investors about purchasing a parcel of commercial space. Gutfeld hopes, he wrote, that Muslims will be as tolerant of homosexuals at the gay bar as Ground Zero mourners will be of the soon-to-be-built Islamic center.

The talk show host/comedian claims his intentions are serious. "This is not a joke," he wrote, adding, "I'm dead serious on this one. (You can tell by the lack of humor in this particular piece.)"

Maybe he's serious. Maybe he's not. But the real question is: would a mosque at Ground Zero be making any point at all?

Let's do a brief recap: the mosque at Ground Zero is so dang controversial because hijackers who brought down the Twin Towers were radical Islamic fascists. Even though Muslims died during the 9/11 attacks and even though plans for the mosque include a performing arts center, a pool, and a restaurant, critics say it's too insensitive to put an Islamic center there. Others question where funding for the Islamic center would come from — which, of course, is a veiled suggestion more Islamo-fascists could be behind it.

Last week New York City Mayor Bloomberg staunchly defended the building plans. "Do you really want every time they pass the basket in your church and you throw a buck in they run over and say, ‘O.K., where did you come from, who are your parents, where did you get this money?’" Bloomberg admonished. "It’s a handful of people who ought to be ashamed of themselves."

But New York State Governor David Paterson is less supportive. Today, Governor Paterson offered to help find suitable property for the mosque elsewhere, if the developers are be amenable. Gov. Paterson still supports the mosque, he claims, but told a news conference today "it does seem to ignite an immense amount of anxiety among the citizens of New York."

I'm with Mayor Bloomberg on building at mosque at Ground Zero, for what it's worth. But what's the point of proposing a gay bar at the same location? Whose intolerance is Greg Gutfeld lampooning? People who oppose the mosque — if you thought a mosque was bad, what do you think about a gay bar? Or is it Muslims — how do you feel if we build something you'll oppose next door to you? Or is he not lampooning anyone at all? Maybe Gutfeld opposes the idea of an Islamic center at Ground Zero and he hopes a gay bar will scare it away. Or maybe he does support it and he wants everyone to stop being bigoted towards people who are different.

Who knows? It's entertaining, to be sure. But I just wish this publicity stunt made sense.
