Former Facebook Privacy Chief Chris Kelly Is Running for Office: Would He Get Your Vote?

chris kelly attorney generalPrivacy Chief, Facebook.

How would you like to have that on your resume and be looking for a job?

That's exactly the position Chris Kelly is in. But, the former head of privacy practices at Facebook isn't looking for any old job, he wants to be the Attorney General of California.

Talk about bad timing.

Privacy concerns at Facebook are front and center, with lawmakers like Senator Chuck Schumer asking the Federal Trade Commission to design privacy rules for social networking sites. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says his company is planning new privacy controls.

Kelly's spokesperson said Facebook's privacy problems heated up only after he left the company last August. Still, last Thursday, one of Kelly's opponents, Kamala Harris, released a statement saying Kelly "must come clean with voters."

"Was Kelly simply a fox guarding the hen house at Facebook?" the campaign asks. "If Kelly couldn't stand up to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on behalf of Facebook users, how on earth can Californians trust Kelly to go to bat on their behalf as attorney general?"

Also on Kelly's resume: He was the domestic-policy and education adviser in the Clinton administration.

Chris Kelly has a Facebook page. This is his first run for public office.

Kamala Harris also has a Facebook page: Kamala D. Harris. She is currently San Francisco's District Attorney.

Is Kelly's old job as privacy chief of Facebook relevant to his abilities as an attorney general?
