John Edwards' Mistress Rielle Hunter Speaks Up

Rielle Hunter may have been the only silent member of the John Edwards scandal team for years, but an extensive GQ interview has just ended that reign.

In a nation of people clamoring for their 15 minutes, Hunter has had that and more without saying a word. You know, until now.

Once a videographer on the former North Carolina senator's campaign for presidency, Hunter is a stay-at-home mom these days to their "love child" as the world's been calling 2-year-old Quinn.

But don't let the wholesome idea conjured up by a woman devoting her days to her child fool you. Hunter's description of her relationship with "Johnny" doesn't leave much to the imagination. Even after she says she doesn't want her daughter to think she goes out and fixes "Daddy's mistakes," she makes plenty of excuses for her former lover.

He lied about her child because he was "traumatized." He cheated on his wife because of the "force field" of their love.

In a piece that takes aim at Elizabeth Edwards from the outset -- it's not Hunter who refers to her as "Saint Elizabeth" but the author -- Hunter claims compassion for the spurned senator's wife not for having an affair with her husband but for her struggle with cancer. For the affair, well, Hunter told GQ, "It's also sad to me, her unwillingness to take responsibility for her part in the marriage. And her unwillingness to face the truth. We're all slaves to our unconscious, but she really believes that it's everyone else's fault. And that's heart-wrenching to me, too."

Accompanied by photos of Hunter in nothing but a tailored shirt and pearls surrounded by her daughter's toys, the former mistress (she says the affair is long over) talks a lot about shielding her child. But we can think of better ways to do that . . . like not talking to a national magazine. Oh, and keep the kid's photo out of there too.
