A grieving mom  from South Carolina is speaking out after her 18-month-old boy died in a tragic accident that involved her stepmother and a hot car. According to Krista  Nix, Joe Lockaby tragically passed away after his grandmother strapped the her boy into his car seat and then passed out. Unfortunately, Joe was trapped in the car for an undisclosed amount of time and when his grandmother regained consciousness, it was too late to save the toddler's life.

Nix, who also has a 3-month-old baby girl, explained to WYFF4 that she had dropped Joe off at his grandmother's house to spend the night. After he woke up from a nap, his grandma was planning on taking the 1-year-old to McDonald's for dinner when she put him in the car. However after she got him strapped in, Nix said that the grandmother realized she left her keys inside and went to go get them. But just as she walked in, the grandmother got dizzy and passed out.

According to WYFF4, the grandmother realized Joe was still in the car when she regained consciousness and found him "breathing heavily." He was reportedly hot to the touch so she tried to cool him down as she called 911. Tragically, it was already too late and first responders pronounced the child dead on the scene at 5:00 p.m.

“It’s a freak accident, his grandmother loved him, she loved all her grandkids," Nix said. "I don’t have any anger towards her cause I know she would never do anything to hurt Joe."

Although autopsy results are still pending, Greenville County Coroner Parks Evans told WBTW that Joe's death is "most likely heat related."

Although the time that the child spent in the car hasn't been disclosed, it's noted that he couldn't get out of the car even if he wanted to because he was buckled into his car seat. "We know it was for an extended period of time, but right now we are trying to determine exactly how long," Evans said. "But we know that the temperature that day got up to the upper 80's."

Due to the "greenhouse effect," cars can heat up very quickly on warm days, reaching up to 125 degrees in just minutes, according to Kids and Cars. Unfortunately, Kars4Kids explains that it only needs to be 104 degrees before a child's organs start shutting down.

"Please I beg you all, hold your babies a little closer and whisper you love them to them every chance you get!" Nix wrote on Facebook."/We aren't promised tomorrow...."
