This Racist Tirade That Went Down at a Kid-Friendly Vacation Pool Is Beyond Disgusting

While Dr. Covey Banks was on vacation with her family at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate, a truly disgusting incident occurred at the pool. Instead of remaining silent, Banks decided to post footage and details from the event on Facebook and her horrifying story is making national headlines because of how another family treated them. According to Banks, who is African American, she and her niece were swimming in the pool when a white family verbally attacked them, using a racial slurs.

  • Banks wrote that it all started when she overheard a mom telling her daughter to pee in the pool.

The moment that set off the upsetting chain of events is disturbing in and of itself because it involved a child.

"A woman was telling her daughter to pee in the pool we were in, while the little girl was crying and begging her mom to take her to the bathroom," Banks wrote. "The mom started looking around, we presumed for the bathroom, and we pointed it out to her. She started yelling 'you don’t know what MY daughter is saying,' 'I’m taking her to the bathroom,' 'I wasn’t telling her to pee in the pool (guilty conscience), etc etc."

Banks wrote that she figured the mom was simply "embarrassed because she got caught being nasty," so "we paid her no mind." Later, Banks says the woman "told her kids to splash us. After a couple of cannonballs, we started splashing too. I mean, we’re in a pool, we don’t mind splashing. Then the mom says 'come on let’s leave these black b*tches.' So now we’re calling names?!"

And that was just the beginning. "Apparently they weren’t getting enough of a reaction out of us," Banks wrote. "The grandma starts yelling 'black b*tch' and 'black b*tches' as they’re exiting the pool."

  • At one point, the mom made a threat and that's when Banks decided to get out of the pool.

"The mom and the dad kept walking but the grandma and grandpa continued to antagonize us," Banks wrote. "You know they dropped the n-word. The grandma tried to swing at my niece and knock her phone out of her hand. I grabbed her arm and stopped her."

  • Banks captured video of the incident. Warning: The following clip includes vile, racist language.

Following this disgraceful horror show, Banks reported the incident to the hotel. "My family was subjected to this horrific treatment by guests at the Omni," she wrote. "The Omni did NOTHING to ensure our safety or denounce the behavior of their other hotel guests. The guests were allowed to remain on the property until Memorial Day. My niece saw them going into their room, which was in the same building and on the same floor as ours and my kids were frightened when we seen them at the pool later Sunday evening."

Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate did not respond to CafeMom's request for comment.

  • When Banks appealed to the hotel security, she says they only talked to the white family to get their side of the story.

Banks then contacted local police who also allegedly went to the white family first. According to Banks, officers said that if she and her family wanted to file charges, she would be charged as well for an alleged scratch on the grandmother's arm.

"She screams, curses, yells racial slurs, obviously under the influence, swings at my niece but she got a scratch on her arm for being stopped and we’ll BOTH be charged?!" Banks wrote. "2/3 officers were rude and completely unprofessional. I gave my statement. Witnesses also came downstairs and wrote their statements in our defense. Their behavior was completely and utterly disgusting. The follow-up was even worse."

In response to the story, Omni Hotels and Resorts President Peter Strebel released the following statement to the Orlando Sentinel: "An incident occurred at our resort in Orlando last weekend. Two families staying with us got into a dispute and one family used racial slurs. The use of such language is completely unacceptable and it will not be tolerated at our hotels and resorts. We are sorry this horrible event occurred at one of our properties and I have personally apologized to Dr. Banks."

The Orlando Sentinel also reports that a spokesman for the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office confirmed deputies responded to the scene. He said a report was taken and will be forwarded to the State Attorney to review. Nobody was arrested that night, and the white couple hasn’t been identified.
