Choosing a baby name can be difficult, but for parents who want to pick a super popular name (or avoid one), they are finally in luck! Nameberry just released the most popular boy and girl names of 2017, just in time for the end of the year. And, to be honest, we're a little surprised by which names took the top spots.

For boys, this year's number one baby name was Atticus.

And for girls? Olivia.

Nameberry got their number one picks by measuring which names attracted the most pageviews from their 250 million users. "It's a gauge of parents’ interest in baby names and a predictor of which names will become more popular in the future," the site explains.

This year's top names highlight a growing trend toward baby names that have an old-fashioned charm. It is also interesting to note that this is Atticus's (meaning "from Attica") first year in the top spot for boys, while it is the second year (in a row!) that parents have fawned over the name Olivia (meaning "olive tree").

And as for the other top names for this year's list, Nameberry found a mixture of both old and new names that have dominated the charts in 2017. For boys, the other names in the top five are Asher, Jack, Theodore, and Jasper; for girls, the names following in Olivia's footsteps are Cora, Amelia, Charlotte, and Isla.

Interestingly, names like Maia and Rumi (of Beyonce and Jay-Z fame) are new to the list this year, as are Henry, Brielle, Allegro, and Celeste. If you're looking for a baby name that will feel "totally 2017," these are the trending newbies to check out!
