The loss of a child is one of the most devastating things any parent could face. Often, when enduring a loss, many parents suffer in silence. It can be too difficult to talk about the grief they're feeling, and many are unsure of how others will react. But on Sunday, one grieving dad shattered the stigma surrounding pregnancy loss with a heartbreaking Instagram post. NFL star Marquise Goodwin revealed he and his wife, Morgan, unexpectedly lost their unborn son just before Goodwin was set to play.

"I just wanna thank those who've genuinely prayed for [Morgan] & myself throughout this pregnancy," he wrote in a post after his game against the Giants. "Unfortunately we lost our baby boy due to some complications, and had to prematurely deliver him early this morning around 4am."

"Although we are hurt, I am grateful for the experience and grateful that God blessed me with a wife as courageous and resilient as Morgan," he added. "The pain (physically, mentally, & emotionally) that she has endured is unbelievable. Please pray for the Goodwin family."

Included with the post was a photo of his son's tiny hand grasping his finger. The post quickly went viral, not just because of the heartbreaking photo and story, but because Goodwin's honesty about what happened and the grief both he and his wife are experiencing breaks the silence surrounding pregnancy loss.

In the comments, people thanked him for his honesty and shared their own stories of loss.

It's estimated that as many as 10-15 percent of all pregnancies end in loss, yet we rarely hear about it, because it's not something grieving families are encouraged to talk about. Miscarriages and stillbirths are treated like secrets, like a source of shame. But in reality, people going through these losses need our support, and they need to be able to share their stories, because it's important to acknowledge what they're feeling and to acknowledge how many others go through it.

Goodwin still played on Sunday and made an impressive 83-yard touchdown that he celebrated by getting down on one knee and looking toward the sky.

At the time, he hadn't yet shared what he and his wife went through earlier that morning. No one had any way of knowing the deeper meaning behind his emotional reaction. But we know now. And Goodwin is a brave and inspirational father for allowing us into his story and speaking out for the thousands of others who share in his and his wife's pain.
