Welcoming a new baby should be among the happiest days of a new mom's life, but one family's joyous celebration turned into an unthinkable tragedy due to a freak accident. Minutes after giving birth, a new mom was killed when a hospital elevator malfunctioned as she was being wheeled to her recovery room.

After Rocio Cortes Nunez delivered her baby girl via a C-section at the Our Lady of Valme Hospital in Seville, Spain, the 26-year-old woman was being moved to a different hospital floor. She was headed to the third floor when a staff member wheeled her stretcher into an elevator. Unfortunately, according to El Correro, the elevator horribly malfunctioned and the new mom was killed.

Rocio's husband, Jose Gaspar, told the Spanish website that he was waiting for his wife when he "heard a loud blow in the elevator." He later learned that Rocio was in the process of being pushed out of the elevator when it started moving, trapping his recovering wife between floors and reportedly cutting her in half.

"I'm a total wreck," Jose told ABC Sevilla. "This cannot continue. Today it has been Rocio, but tomorrow it could be another person."

In 2011, a woman in New York City suffered a similar accident when an elevator unexpectedly moved as she was stepping in. Suzanne Hart was killed after being pinned between the first and second floors. As scary as that sounds, the New York Times reports this type of issue is incredibly rare, as most new elevators are equipped with a safety circuit intended to prevent similar tragedies.
