Video of Toddler Almost Drowning in Floaties Is a Serious Wake-Up Call

Summer is here, and that means parents are more concerned with pool safety than ever. We're stocking up on sunscreen and floaties, signing our kids up for swim lessons, and warning them over and over again not to leave the shallow end of the pool. But this scary viral video of a drowning toddler proves even with all the precuations in place, we truly can't ever let our guards down when our kids are in the water.

A video clip from a community pool shows a toddler boy wearing a flotation device and splashing in a kiddie pool surrounded by other children. But just a few seconds into the clip, he suddenly falls forward and ends up facedown in the water. He struggles as the weight of his floatie keeps him from being able to right himself. It really is the stuff of parenting nightmares.

As parents, we're on the lookout for signs of danger all the time. We're constantly eight steps ahead of our kids, cutting their grapes in half and warning them to look both ways when they cross the street. But it's easy to get lulled into a false sense of security when your kids are wearing their floaties, hanging out in a mere two to three feet of water, and having a ball with other kids.

The sad fact is, accidents can happen in the blink of an eye -- even when we're right there and we've seemingly done everything we can to avoid them. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are an average of 3,536 fatal unintentional drownings in the US each year, and one in five victims is a child under 14.
