Target's Awesome T-Shirt Gives Moms Credit for Being Kickass Role Models

With all the news in recent years about kids' T-shirts that range from disturbingly sexist to downright inappropriate, we couldn't be happier to tell you about a new tee being sold at Target with a delightfully feminist slogan for both girls and boys. Printed with the words "Strong Like Mom," the shirt sends the exact message kids need to hear -- particularly right now, when women's rights are under attack and the issue of gender identity is becoming increasingly controversial (yet again).

Sure, to any evolved human being this shirt seems like a no-brainer -- why wouldn't a kid (of either gender) inherit strength from his or her mom? But when you think about all the onesies out there that say things like "Tuff Guy (Like My Daddy)" or "Beautiful Like My Mommy," it becomes painfully obvious that the majority of products marketed to children are the product of ridiculously backwards thinking. So a shirt like this one is actually very meaningful ... more than that, it's powerful.

And it's clearly striking a chord with parents all over -- just check out the #StrongLikeMom hashtag on Instagram.

"Today, for the first time in 3 years, I found a shirt for my son that says 'strong like Mom' rather than 'strong like Dad,'" writes Instagram user and mom Leah Abbleby-Michael. "Thank you Target for realizing that little boys can want to be strong like their moms as well as like their dads."

Yes, thank you!

Squee! As a former single mom (who was raised by a single mom), I'm not at all surprised by how popular this shirt is becoming. Whether they have partners or not, we just plain don't give moms enough credit in this society for everything they do and all of their many incredible qualities, particularly their strength. Our kids need to know that they can look up to their moms for being tough, the same way they can admire their dads for their sensitivity.

Neither gender has the marketplace on any one attribute cornered, just as neither gender should be expected to embody any particular trait. Women can be badass warriors. Men can be caring nurturers. Ideally, both moms and dads are a little bit of everything. Why can't fashion and pop culture reflect that?

Okay, so this is just one T-shirt on Target shelves. But that one T-shirt represents a shift in our collective sensibility. It's a small (but fun!) step in our ongoing journey toward actual equality, in parenting and everything else. (And did we mention it's only $6?!)
