Once you become a mom, you realize that there's nothing you won't do to protect your child. One brave, quick-thinking mama made the ultimate sacrifice. Illinois mom Shelby Carter tossed her baby from a second-story window as her home was burning. The 21-year-old mom unfortunately died, but not before saving her 12-day-old baby girl's life.

Carter had only a minute or two to consider her options as her home became engulfed in flames, investigators told the Washington Post. So, the smart young mom strapped her infant into her car seat and tossed her from the window.

Needless to say, the community is mourning the loss of this woman who will never have a chance to know the daughter whose life she saved. While most people would have panicked, she was clearheaded enough to make a decision that ultimately got her daughter to safety.

Ed Foglesonger, chief of the Wyoming-Speer Fire Protection District, told the Washington Post, "It's just incredible that she was able to pull her thoughts together to save her baby. It's just too bad she couldn't save herself, but I'd say it's nothing short of a miracle the way it ended up."

Wow, talk about a hero!

Investigators are still looking into what caused the fired but believe it was not suspicious. A GoFundMe account has also been set up for Carter's daughter and mother.

Rescuers reportedly located the infant, Keana Davis, atop a pile of debris, sitting safely in her car seat. In what many regard as another miracle, the infant only sustained a minor burn and no other injuries. Truly amazing.

While it's heartbreaking that this child will grow up without her mother, she'll always know it was her mom who made sure she survived. That's a precious memory to have even if she is too young to realize it.
