Diaper Duty Just Got Easier for Dads In Public -- Thanks, Obama!

Baby Changing Room Sign, metal sign on concrete wall

Break out the confetti, it's time to celebrate! President Obama recently signed the Bathrooms Accessible in Every Situation Act (BABIES) requiring men and women's restrooms to have baby changing stations that are "safe, sanitary, and appropriate" in all federal buildings open to the public. This step in the right direction is awesome news for families that will, hopefully, make heading out with baby a little easier for parents.

Led by Congressman David Cicilline, the BABIES Act will outfit restrooms available to the public in General Services Administration buildings -- including some post officers and courthouses -- with an area to change their child's diaper. No stations, however, are required if the building has an accessible bathroom with a baby changing station.

Cicilline has been an advocate for diaper changing areas in all public restrooms, stating on his website:

No mom or dad should ever have to worry about finding a safe, sanitary place to change their baby -- least of all in a federal building that's paid for by taxpayers. The BABIES Act is a commonsense proposal that makes government buildings more welcoming for families and helps promote good public health.

I can't tell you how excited this new law makes me feel. I absolutely LOATHE public restrooms and try to dodge them at all costs. Thankfully, I have a husband who is about the diaper changing life with our 2- and 1-year-old boys, but often hits a roadblock whenever there's no family bathroom available.

He's always frustrated whenever he goes to run errands with the boys by himself, because men's restrooms that have baby changing stations aren't that common.

And guess what? He's definitely not alone.

I can only imagine what single dads, gay fathers, and gents babysitting a kid or relative go through -- and all the extra steps they have to take -- just to change a diaper.

I'm hopeful that this awesome law will expand to more public spaces and inspire more companies to outfit all public bathrooms with some type of changing station.

It's a sh*tty job as is, so it's one that should be a little easier for everyone when we're on the go.
