There is no scarier thought to a parent, than the worry that their child will be abducted. But what if you were this close to that nightmare becoming a reality? A new video out of Brisbane, Australia has surfaced that shows just how fast an abduction can take place, when a man quickly walks over to a neighboring car and tries to make off with the little girl inside.

According to 7 News Brisbane, the 8-year-old was being dropped off at home after a birthday party by a friend's mother, when she was momentarily left by herself in the mother's vehicle. In the unnerving video of the attempted kidnapping, a strange man makes his move just seconds after the chaperone walks into the Emerald Hotel, first pretending to follow her and another child into the hotel, and then doubling back when it seems like no one was looking.

The man then makes his way over to the child in the backseat of her car, according to the official Queensland police report, but she screams and pushes him away. Then, a hotel manager startles the man, when he comes out to do routine maintenance, causing the kidnapper to quickly shut the door, get back in his car, and drive away. Scarily, it was only this good fortune that prevented disaster from happening.

Surprisingly, kidnapping rates in the US have actually been swiftly falling. In fact, a 2015 article from The Washington Post claimed that "there’s never been a safer time to be a kid in America." The article explains that reports of missing minors have fallen by 40 percent since 1997, and that -- including both missing adults and children -- "only 0.1 percent of missing persons cases were what we'd think of as a "stereotypical kidnapping."

So, despite how scary this video is, parents shouldn't worry too hard over the fear of their child being snatched. Still, as the video shows, tragedy can happen in seconds. If you want to be on the safe side, it's always best to be aware of your surroundings and think twice before leaving a child  unattended.
