'Selfish' Mom Admits to Having Child-Free Weekends & Everyone Freaks the F Out

Model Rachael Finch was paired with dancer Michael Miziner on Australia's Dancing With the Stars. They fell in love, married, and had a baby, Violet, who is now 2 years old. Most everyone loved their love story -- until Rachael admitted that they are child-free every weekend so they can stay connected as a couple. A firestorm of hate has erupted.

In an interview with Sunday Style, Finch candidly said, "Every weekend (Violet) goes to Mish's mum's house, and we get our weekend to ourselves. I think that’s incredibly healthy for the relationship. And on Sunday, when we pick her up, we have 100 percent energy back."

Is anyone else thinking that they would like that once in a while? Come on, now. Admit it. It would be great to have some weekends kid-free. Who wouldn't enjoy going to the grocery store without one kid refusing to move from the ice cream section in protest of your refusing to purchase some? Or having your two children getting on each other's last nerve when you've only completed the third aisle and there are 10 more to go.

And this isn't just about grocery shopping alone. Think of sleeping in. Of drinking a cup of coffee -- a full cup -- that is actually hot and freshly brewed, and reading a magazine without any interruptions. You could find time to sort the mess of toys and organize. Heck, maybe even go out to dinner to a place that doesn't cater to child-friendly seating. Or, you know, really bond with your significant other.

Instead of being happy for Rachael and her husband Michael, people are bashing them for abandoning their sweet Violet at Grandma's house. As if Grandma were a fire-breathing monster who gave Violet nightmares. How dare they!?

I don't think Rachael would lovingly call her husband Mish if they didn't have these weekends to bond. Now, Rach is being called the worst mom in the world -- and that is just one of the nicer comments from the hate parade.

"She's too little to be dropped at grandmas EVERY weekend! there is no greater love than a mother's! How do u do it every week! Aren't you missing her?"

"Grow up and stop being selfish. Aren't weekends for family? Especially your children?!?"

"disgraceful!"

"how can u be a parent only 5 days a week selfish to leave ur baby every single weekend u reap what you sow"

Haters are always going to be out there in Internetland, but I can't help but think that some of those spewing the mean words really wish they had some weekends child-free, too. Wouldn't it be nice to get away? Just a little break? I think it's needed.

I'm a divorced mom, so I kind of understand this weekend "freedom." But let's not get too crazy. I'm never "free" from my kids even when they are sleeping at their dad's house. I'm a mom. Everything I do, even when I get the rare pedicure in my attempt to pamper myself, I am still thinking about my kids. When they have that dance recital. What is the best day for us to go on that bike ride we've been wanting to go on. What is our granola inventory -- how many new snacks do I need to get for their snack bag?

The day I became a mother is the day I said good-bye to being "kid-free," even if they aren't physically next to me every day of every year and every minute of every day. I am still Mom. Full-time, all the time.

Maybe Rachael needs this time to do whatever it is she needs to do. Who are we to tell her she's wrong? Violet is probably thrilled to be with Grandma. Plus, Rachael's daughter is only 2. Once she's in sports or dance or school all week, I'd bet there may be some weekend changes. Who knows -- maybe those who bash Rachael for her child-free weekends will get some themselves and realize that it's really magical and refreshing and recharging.

And you know, maybe Rachael's relationship with Mish needed a little extra TLC. Doesn't every relationship deserve that?

What happened to live and let live? It's not like Rachael is bragging about feeding her child live lizards dipped in hot sauce pooped out by feral cats covered in Lyme disease–carrying ticks. The kid is just hanging with Grams.

Whatever works for this family is what they should do. If it doesn't seem like something you'd do, it's simple, really. Just don't do it.
