School Gives First-Grader Toy Gun as a Gift & Mom Is Not Happy

Michigan elementary school gives first-grader a toy gun for Christmas

Given the tragic events involving weapons and violence in our society, it's only natural for people to be on alert. One Michigan mom is both furious and confused, after her son's elementary school gave her 6-year-old a toy gun as part of his Christmas gift.

Brieanna Johnson still can't believe her son Cameron had a realistic toy gun -- with a silencer -- in his gift bag. She was dumbfounded as to why Herrington Elementary would approve such a toy, but school officials claim all the presents students received during a holiday party came pre-wrapped from local companies and organizations. They simply had no idea about the contents, given no one checked the gifts prior to handing them out.

I'm sorry, but this is not okay ... at all!

First off, the school should've checked the gifts, period. Organizations that collect items for children during the holiday season often ask for them to come unwrapped, and I'd think an elementary school (of all places) would do the same. It's great that businesses and organizations want to make children's holidays a little merrier, but this is unacceptable.

Second, the school not only failed to inspect the presents before giving them to young children, but also still have no clue who gifted the gun to little Cameron.

Talk about a double whammy.

Hearing about this makes me think about Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old boy who was shot to death after police thought the toy gun he was playing with was real. I also think about Sandy Hook, and all the other schools and campuses that suffered from gun violence over the recent years.

Why on earth would any company think giving a child a toy gun would make for an awesome Christmas present?

Even as a gun owner, I don't plan on letting my sons play with toy guns -- especially ones that mimic assault rifles. I would be so angry if their elementary schools allowed gifts like this.

We really need to do better ...
