'Miracle Baby' Survives Crash That Kills Pregnant Mom on Christmas Eve

police tapeA Christmas Eve tragedy followed by a true holiday miracle: A seven months pregnant mother-of-three was killed by a hit-and-run driver on December 24th in Chicago, but emergency responders were able to deliver her baby boy, who is currently in stable condition and expected to survive.

26-year-old Karla Y. Leanos was crossing the street around 10 pm when she was struck and killed, and witnesses and surveillance video footage paint an incredibly "gruesome" picture; Leanos was reportedly "knocked out of her boots" by the impact. While the footage also shows that the driver, 22-year-old Silvestre Garcia, did in fact have a green light, he did not stop at the scene. On Sunday, Garcia was charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident causing death (both felonies). He was also cited for having a defective windshield and driving with an open alcohol container. His bond was set at $750,000.

Of course, no matter what happens to Garcia, nothing will bring Leanos back. It's just an unbelievable heartbreak for her family -- I can't even imagine what her children are going through (and on Christmas Eve, too!). But it's also a blessing of astonishing proportions that the baby survived such a violent encounter, not to mention a premature delivery.

Here's hoping this family finds healing and many, many more blessings in the new year.
