This is such an unthinkable situation, especially when you consider Cara's oncologist couldn't identify the source of her cancer.

Sadly, this 38-year-old Missouri wife and mom of three was diagnosed with stage IV melanoma when she was 23 weeks pregnant with her fourth child. Rather than follow her doctor's recommendation to have her baby then, Cara decided to delay her cancer treatments by a few weeks, in hopes baby would be strong enough to survive.

When Cara was around 28 weeks pregnant, she went into labor, and gave birth on December 4 to her daughter Shaylin -- who weighed 2 lbs, 1.2 ounces at the time of delivery. While the baby has seen some progress -- including breathing on her own -- Cara passed away on December 8.

Cara was days away from starting her treatment.

... There are absolutely no words for the sorrow I feel hearing this. Cara was a brave soul, who did everything in her power to make sure baby Shaylin would survive. I can't even begin to imagine how this family is coping, both with the birth of a baby and the loss of a loving wife and mother.

What's bittersweet about Cara's story is that Emily Lucarz, a local photographer, was able to capture such a beautiful family portrait, the day before Cara went into labor. Emily was also there at the hospital to take photos of Mom and baby -- including Cara holding her precious bundle of joy. These are memories the Combs family will have for a lifetime, that are worth more than money can buy.

To help with medical expenses, a GoFundMe page has been set up in Cara's honor -- and has seen such an outpouring of generous donations, from friends and strangers alike, who offer their condolences and prayers.

My thoughts are with Cara's family, and baby Shaylin. This is such a heartbreaking story, that also shows the love a mother has for her child.
