Mom In Coma Wakes Up When She Hears Her Baby Cry

baby mom holding handsA crying baby is a pretty hard thing to ignore, but recently this fact became fodder for a miracle when a mom in a coma woke up when she heard her baby cry.

Shelly Cawley, a 23-year-old from Concord, North Carolina, had given birth at Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast by emergency C-section. But after several hours passed and she didn't wake from her general anesthesia, doctors warned the dad Jeremy that they were losing her.

That's when nurse Ashley Manus suggested they bring in baby Rylan to help.

"We're a big proponent of skin-to-skin [contact]. We believe it has great benefits for the mom and the baby, and we just thought it can't hurt, might as well give it a try," Manus told People magazine. "I was hoping somewhere deep down, Shelly was still there and could feel her baby, hear her baby, and her mother's instincts would come out and she would realize, 'This is where I need to be.'"

Miraculously, as soon as the baby started wailing, Shelly's vitals spiked on her monitor. Within days she was awake and holding her baby in her arms.

So amazing! But I do really think that if anything could wake a mom from a coma, it would be her own baby crying. And we always hear how skin-to-skin is so good and even life-saving for babies, but it totally makes sense that it would be life-saving for moms, too.

Let's hear it for this baby for saving Mama's life!
