This Photo May Change the Way You Feel About Your C-Section Scar (PHOTO)

c-section scarA photo of a newborn nestled next to his mom's C-section has gone viral: Some say it's gross, others graphic, while many more find it gorgeous and inspiring -- a testament to moms who must face this frightening operation for the sake of their kids.

Although the mother in this photo has chosen to remain anonymous, the photographer, Helen Aller, has come forward to explain the story behind it.

"I photographed this mama's pregnancy a couple of weeks back and she was telling me how terrified she was of having a C-section," says Aller, a 29-year-old mother of two who is eight months pregnant herself and lives in Guernsey, an island in the English Channel.

Yet during her birth, the mom's worst fears were realized when she was forced to have an emergency C-section. During her newborn shoot three days later, Helen photographed her baby by the wound. The reason? "To show that her biggest fear ended up saving both their lives," Aller says.

After posting the photo on Facebook, Aller was surprised to see it spread like wildfire, with 11.5 million viewers and counting. Some called it inspiring, others disturbing or downright pornographic, while plenty of other moms just shared their own C-section experiences.

"'I'm not a huge fan of having a scar across my lower abdomen, but I've learned to embrace it because that is where my babies came from," said one mom; another: "This is such a powerful image. I also had an emergency C-section. It makes you realize the beauty in it all."

"All I can say is the experience has been amazing and humbling," Aller says. "I feel proud that an image I created has had such an impact on so many people from all walks of life, and I feel that it's bigger than just the picture. It's become a platform for people to open up about their own experiences good and bad."

As a mom who had an emergency C-section herself, I hafta say, I was moved by this photo, too. While I often stare down at my cesarean scar in disdain, this photo made me realize it's a battle scar I should be proud of. It's totally true: That little incision saved my baby's life. What's not to love about that?
