Kids Taking Viral 'Kylie Jenner Challenge' Are Hurting Themselves to Be Cool

Everyone is obsessed with Kylie Jenner's lips. As pillowy as they've become over the last few years, the 17-year-old continues to claim she has not had plastic surgery and is simply a makeup maven. Uh huh. Teen girls are calling her bluff by doing something bizarre to achieve Kylie lips and posting their bruised, battered, and inflated lip photos on Twitter with the hash tag #KylieJennerChallenge. Sigh.

In an effort to get bigger lips, teens participating in the challenge are cramming their lips inside of shot glasses and sucking. The results are insanely disturbing—particularly because  many of the participants look a lot younger than Kylie. Here's a video of one teen performing the challenge:

And another video:

Several photos on Twitter look similar to this one, which shows a young girl's bruised lips after she took the #KylieJennerChallenge:

This challenge is risky, according to experts, who are warning teens that the shot glass can break while they're sucking, leading to cuts and injuries. While I agree no one should try this stupid stunt because they could get hurt, I'd argue there's an even better reason not to attempt this stupid stunt: you're emulating a reality TV star who has yet to win a world record, write a song, help build an orphanage, graduate college, or even vote in an election.

In short: challenging yourself to look more like a cartoon character is beyond bizarre and sad.

More from The Stir: Kylie Jenner's Huge Lips Can Finally Be Explained

At first, I thought: maybe these teens are poking fun at Kylie and showing the world how silly it is to pump up your lips to artificial proportions. Surely, no one thinks they look good like this, right? If they could find some way to take that stand using makeup, and not a shot glass, I'd be all for it.

I hope I'm right. I hope this is all just a wacky joking way of trying to prove that natural is best—but I also fear the message this sends out is that Kylie's lips are something we should all try and achieve, regardless of whether big lips are in our genes.

When I was younger, the world of plastic surgery wasn't accessible to teens. In our eyes, it was a bizarre universe inhabited only by a small percentage of Park Avenue socialites, most of whom were in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. We wouldn't have even dreamed of going under the knife—it just wasn't part of teen culture.

It makes me sad to know that Kylie and other really young people are, whether they realize it or not, promoting plastic surgery and obscenely exaggerated body enhancements.

Let's hope this challenge is just a joke and that it goes away quickly.

Why do you think teens are taking the Kylie Jenner Challenge?
