Children's Book Teaches Kids About Mom's Abortion

A new children's e-book helps moms raise a sticky topic with their kids: abortion. Titled Sister Apple, Sister Pig by Mary Walling Blackburn, this controversial tome can be downloaded for free at Talk about some upbeat bedtime reading material!

Here's the gist: In 33 picture-filled pages, a 3-year-old boy named Lee learns that before he was born, his mommy had aborted what would have been his older sister.

And yet, as startling as this seems, the book actually paints a pretty rosy picture, calling the aborted sibling a "happy ghost" who's still around in the form of an apple ... or a pig.

Meanwhile, the boy is also pretty happy that his sister is not around, explaining, "Mama might be scared that she could not buy enough food for us." He also thinks a sibling would have robbed him of quality mommy time: "Mama might not have enough time to read to me, to paint with me, to talk with me."

Who could have thought this book could be so, well, happy? But whether moms will consider this decent bedtime reading material remains to be seen.

What do you think of this book?
