Teacher Donates Kidney to 6-Year-Old Student

Lindsey Painter and student Matthew

Lindsey Painter is a first grade teacher at Hoffman Lane Elementary in New Braunfels, TX. She's also married and the mom of two young boys, so she's probably got a pretty hectic life. Still, she's making a pretty darn impressive sacrifice: donating a kidney to one of her 6-year-old students.

According to ABC News, Matthew Parker has been seriously ill since he was a newborn. In 2010, he even had a kidney transplant but it failed, leaving the poor kid to have dialysis several days a week. Doctors put Matthew back on the transplant list, hoping to find him yet another a new kidney. In December, Lindsey, along with over 70 other potential donors, stepped up to get tested. Doctors warned that Matthew had only a 1 percent chance of finding a match. But he did.

It was Lindsey. And of course, she agreed.

Are you tearing up yet? Because we kind of are.

More from The Stir: 8 Things I'd Like to Thank My Teachers For

Sometimes, we get so busy griping about homework loads, science fair projects, or yet another school rule/obligation that it can be easy to forget that teachers (most of them, at least) truly love our kids -- a lot.

And good thing, too. Because think of all the hours a day they're with our kids. It's not only about teaching them to read and write and not push other kids down on the playground. We rely on teachers to instill lessons of generosity, patience, and kindness, too.

If you're like us, you can still name all your favorite teachers from when you were a kid, and what they taught you. Lucky Matthew Parker -- his teacher is giving him the ultimate life lesson.

Lindsay's transplant surgery is slated for mid-March. Most of the costs will be covered, but she'll need at least 3 weeks off work to recuperate, so a friend has set up a GoFundMe page, hoping to raise $20,000 to help out.

We're thinking it will make us feel pretty good to chip in a few bucks. But at the very least, we're going to let our own kids' teachers know how grateful we are to have them in our lives. We're willing to bet they would make the same incredible sacrifice if need be.
