Mom Asks You to Feed Your Kids Ice Cream for Breakfast to Honor Child Who Died

One family in Minnesota is embracing the saying, "Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first," in memory of the child they lost to cancer. The Petersons, whose daughter, Malia, died in 2010 after a 14-month battle with kidney cancer, have started Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day to honor the memory of Malia and celebrate the fighting spirit of children who are facing the disease.

Malia's mom, Annette, explains how the idea came about:

We wanted to honor our daughter on her birthday, but we weren’t emotionally ready for an actual party, We came up with the idea of an online party where we would ask close friends and family to photograph themselves eating ice cream for breakfast and upload it to our Facebook event page for Malia.

The virtual ice cream social, started in 2013 and held each February 18, has been a sweet success. To join the fun, the Petersons suggest eating ice cream for breakfast and uploading the photos to their Facebook page or to Twitter using the hashtag #icecreamforbreakfast or #kidsgetcancertoo.

We love this idea because it really appeals to children on their level. Seriously, what kid is going to say "no" to an ice cream sundae for breakfast? While walk-a-thons and other fundraisers are great ways to raise money and awareness for worthy causes, this idea is pure fun.

It's also a great way for moms to show kids that it's all right to take a day off from those healthy, hearty breakfasts when it's for a great cause. Mornings are typically stressful, routine-based run-arounds. What a refreshing change to sit down with a leisurely ice cream cone and really savor the start to your day!

Plus, mixing it up can be inspiring, and that's exactly what the Petersons have done by not going the traditional route in honoring their child. Sometimes just taking a little detour from the norm and your day-to-day schedule can recharge your batteries while creating great new memories for your little ones.

The Petersons and anyone who visits the page can't help but find the photos of people of all ages eating ice cream for breakfast totally uplifting. Even actor Kevin Bacon has gotten into the act. How sweet!

Congratulations to the Petersons for coming up with such a special way to remember their daughter and bring joy and hope to others at the same time.

Would you eat ice cream for breakfast to honor these children?
