Mom Delivers 10-Pound Baby While Driving Herself to the Hospital

car on side of roadMost moms would agree it's pretty hard to stay calm once you realize you're in labor. Now imagine trying to keep it together while driving yourself to the hospital -- alone! Utah mom Devi Mariah Ostler not only kept her cool in that situation, ultimately, she delivered her own baby on the roadside when she realized her near-10-pound son wasn't going to wait to make his first appearance in a traditional delivery room.

The courageous mom explains:

I knew the baby was coming and it doesn't help to panic. So, I just stayed calm and said, 'Well, if I deliver it on my own then I deliver it on my own. If somebody gets here, somebody gets here. The baby is here. There's not much more I can do about it.'

Fortunately, police officers arrived at the scene, and less than minute later her healthy 9.9-pound baby boy was born. Now, granted, this is her third child, but still: Could you ever remain this poised under pressure?

This story is really inspiring. Moms, especially first-timers, get so worried and freaked out about delivery. But Ostler's story kinda puts it all in perspective, doesn't it? It also proves that panicking doesn't help anyone.

If this mom can deliver a big bruiser on the side of a highway alone ... gosh darnit, you can do it in a hospital, with a doctor, an anesthesiologist, fluffy pillows, and cable TV as a distraction, no sweat! (OK, maybe a little sweat, and some grunting, but you get the point.)

Did you have a close call on the way to the hospital? What happened?
