Cops Ticket Kids for Wearing Bike Helmets (VIDEO)

police and kids on bikesHere's a fun summer story that's nothing but sweet. In Brimfield, Ohio, a genius police chief has come up with a cool way to encourage kids to wear their bicycle helmets.

He has instructed his officers to give out tickets -- and lots of them. He's encouraging the profiling of children, and is on a mission to make sure kids stay safe. He issued the mandate via the police department's Facebook page.

My officers will have a quota for tickets … at least one per shift. We are going to be profiling, too. We will target a specific group, with the express purpose of writing as many tickets as possible. I am strongly encouraging my officers to write as many as they can, every shift, every day … it is called Operation Safe Summer.

Sounds a little scary, but the tickets don't come with fines or other penalties for those not wearing helmets. Rather they're given to kids who do wear helmets, and they're redeemable for a free ice cream cone.

How brilliant is that? I love that they took a positive approach to such an important initiative. They easily could have just cracked down and busted kids for NOT wearing them; instead they've made it so kids want to wear them. It's fun for officers and kids alike, and a great way to build relationships in the community.

I hope police departments across the country are inspired and think about implementing similar initiatives.
