Woman Who Escaped 'Dark Knight' Massacre Gives Birth While Her Husband Clings to Life

Caleb MedleyCaleb MedleyI imagine the conversation Katie and Caleb Medley had before attending the premiere of The Dark Knight Rises that fateful night in Aurora, Colorado. It's going to be our last chance to do things like this for awhile before the baby comes and changes our lives. Then in the blink of an eye, alleged gunman James Holmes entered the theatre and started shooting, forever changing their lives in ways they could have never imagined.

Katie was able to escape the theatre, her baby safe and sound inside her womb. Today, the baby boy, who they had agreed to name Hugo, made his debut at 7:11 a.m. According to CBS, he and his mother are "doing great."

Unfortunately, just one hospital floor away, his father Caleb, who should have been there welcoming his son into the world, lay in critical condition, clinging to life.

I just can't imagine how bittersweet this birth was. On one hand, here's the child you've been nurturing and growing for months, waiting to see his little fingers and face, and finally he's there in your arms. It's one of the most joyful days of a parent's life, but how can you experience any joy after seeing such horrors? How can you celebrate life when this baby may never know his father? How can you celebrate life when you've just witnessed such a ruthless disregard for it?

I don't know. I hope, however, that somehow Katie Medley is able to. I hope she has the support and love that she needs to remain hopeful, to continue to see the good in the world, and to celebrate her son's life for the miracle it is. I hope in his innocent little face she's able to find strength and positivity for him.

And hopefully, one of these days, Caleb will take a turn for the better and be able to hold his son in his arms. There are some new small signs that he's improving. Perhaps he'll sense that his son needs him, and I pray that he'll make a recovery and they can all start to heal together, as a family.

In the meantime, his family is asking for donations to help cover medical costs. If you can help, it surely would be much appreciated.

Have you ever experienced a bittersweet birth?
