Doctors Remove Toddler's Enormous Tumor -- It Weighs More Than He Does!

toy ballYou read that right: Doctors removed a 33-pound tumor from a 26-pound toddler. The tumor ran from the boy's armpit to his hip and it took doctors 10 hours to remove it. He's doing fine now and the tumor was benign, so phew! But wow, that's... amazing.

The surgery took place in Mexico City on June 14. Doctor Gustavo Hernandez says this was the first time doctors in Mexico had removed a tumor that weighed more than the patient. Can you imagine what it must have been like for that two-year-old to have such a big tumor?

He was born with the growth, and it just kept getting larger. So how did he learn how to walk -- or did he ever learn? (The photo in the article shows him standing.) Imagine carrying something that weighs just a little more than you do around with you all the time. I don't think I could! Maybe they had some sort of carrier on wheels he could use to move it around with him.

And then think about how liberating it would be to get rid of the thing. He must feel like a butterfly now. I'm so happy for the boy and his family. This must be such a blessing for them. It's mind-boggling to think about how a person could grow a tumor so larger. How does that happen? But it's gratifying to know that when such strange things do happen we have the technology to do something about it.

How do you think the boy and his parents managed with the tumor before his surgery?
