Listen, you don't have to tell me pacifiers are the cat's pajamas. When my daughter was teething, she wanted nothing to do with those soft plastic rings or frozen bagels. All she wanted to do was chew on her binky. She'd chomp on that bit of yellowish rubber like it had done her wrong, and when I was finally forced to replace it out of fear that all her gumming was going to break it in two, she proceeded to masticate another one.

The fact that the American Academy of Pediatrics itself touts the pacifier as a great way to prevent SIDS was just the ammunition I needed to face down nosy grannies in the supermarket who wanted to tell me how to parent my kid. The pacifier was staying.

Until it wasn't. I'd read the theories that prolonged pacifier use can seriously interrupt a kid's speech development, and as far as I'm concerned, it's the truth. I've seen it happen with a friend's son. I wasn't going to let that happen in our house.

But we all know what happens when we make a decision without asking our kids their opinions -- no matter how old they are. They make a different one. It took us a good month to get that plug out of her mouth, but Sesame Street thinks they can do it in one week!

Check out Elmo's take on Put Down the Pacifier Day and tell us, are you fighting the big bad binky in your house?
