Amazing Dad Delivers Son on Side of the Road

utah interstateBabies these days must be bored of hospital beds and birthing tubs, because they're making their grand entrances in very unusual places. Earlier this week, we heard about the baby born on an airplane, now comes the story of little Hawk Benjamin Marsden, born on the side of a busy Utah highway.

Hawk's dad Ben was trying to get his wife Ashley to the hospital in time, he really was -- but you can't go much faster than 90 mph! And Hawk was not about to wait. (Personally, I suspect he overheard his parents talking about their plan for a "calm, relaxing" hypnobirth and thought to himself, Forget that lame idea! I'm makin' a splash when I bust outta this joint. I'm gonna be a star, you hear me? A star!)

Hawk is a star, no doubt about that. But one could argue that his father Ben was the one to really steal the show ...

Ben and Ashley already have three kids, so Ben knew by Ashley's screams when it was time to ditch the hospital plan and pull over to the side of the road. Just after 2 a.m., with the help of a 911 operator named Robin Carpenter (who'd never assisted in an emergency delivery before!), he delivered his son. Woo-hoo!

My favorite part of this story is when Carpenter suggested Ben tie off the umbilical cord with a shoelace. He was wearing flip-flops and his wife was wearing slippers! (He improvised with an elastic ban from the car's visor.)

Happily, everybody is now doing fine. Kudos to Ben for keeping his cool! He did an awesome job.

Except, well, by the way ... so did Ashley!! The woman gave birth on the side of the road with one leg sticking out the car door and the other propped up on the dashboard!

Just saying.

What would your husband do if he had to deliver your baby?
