Toddlers Toting BB Guns Are Toying With Danger

toddler gunAnother day, another toddler with a gun. The most basic childcare rule -- no guns for 4-year-olds -- has been ignored yet again in Port St. Lucie, Florida. This time, thank god, no one was shot when a little boy went around knocking on doors and showing his gun to his neighbors, under the direction of a family member.

What a welcome to the neighborhood: An adorable toddler brandishing what some described as looking like a handgun. I’d be so confused. Is this a neighborhood filled with families? Or NRA members? Should I be letting my own kids go outside and play? Or suiting them up with body armor?

Thank goodness one of the neighbors decided to call 911, and the man who is responsible for encouraging this act was arrested on charges of felony child abuse and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a child. He's lucky that's all that happened, or he’d be responsible for a heck of a lot more in damages.

Kids and guns don't mix, people. Ever. It doesn't matter how cute it is to see toddlers doing grown-up things, guns -- even BB guns -- can hurt other people. Ask anyone who’s ever been shot by one -- like most of the kids I grew up with in a rural area. Still, regardless of whether you live in a rural or urban area, guns should be kept away from small children.

I wonder if those people who champion teaching kids about guns think this little guy should be learning how to carry around a weapon?
