Toddler & Mother Found In Dumpster

Certain news stories just get under our skin and the impossibly sad story of Maria Avelina Palaguachi-Cela, 25, and her 2-year-old son Brian Palaguachi is one of them. The pair was found dead in a trash bin last Sunday in Brockton, Massachusetts.

The family came from Ecuador and according to CNN, the crime may have had something to do with domestic violence. "She was not a random target," the DA assured those in Brockton who were understandably shaken by the crime.

Random or not, the case is painful to read and hear about. Maybe it is because I have a 2-year-old son and I can't help but imagine something like this happening to him when I hear something like this. Just the words, "2-year-old boy found dead" really should never have to be spoken.

It is hard not to imagine his mother and what she thought in her final moments. I can imagine she desperately wanted to protect her baby son and was not able to do so. The thought is almost too sad to even contemplate.

What kind of person does something like this to a child and his mother? There are sick people and then there are people that don't even deserve our pity and this person falls in the latter category.

Brian was Palaguachi-Cela's only child living in the United States, according to the district attorney, but she does have an older child who lives elsewhere, out of the country. It is hard to imagine a young mom, here on her own, away from her other child, going through this and now her other child has lost a mother and a brother. Truly tragic.

A 2-year-old boy needs loves and cuddles. He needs to be read to and tucked in and kissed and hugged. Instead someone hurt him and his mother and threw them away like garbage. It makes me seriously question the kind of world we are living in. That kind of thing just should not happen.

Are there certain stories that creep under your skin, too?
