Video Game Addict Mom Strangles Toddler

computerIn South Korea, a mother was exhausted after playing hours of online video games. Her patience was short when her 3-year-old son interrupted her attempt to rest by crying and peeing on the floor. She snapped, beat him, then strangled him until he died

As if that wasn't bad enough, she then left the boy's body in the house for three days before her in-laws reported it to the police, probably gaming right there alongside his dead little body.

"She said she was so mad at him because she was about to take some rest after playing online games for four hours in the morning," a police spokesman said. That's her excuse.

She reportedly had no previous mental illness, but played about 10 hours of online games each day. Neighbors said her home was "like a trash site" and that her two children (she had a 1-year-old in addition to the boy she killed) cried for hours each day.

My heart breaks for those boys, and I wonder where there father was. If there was a father? And why someone didn't intervene? Mostly I wonder: How could she?

It's easy to see how online games and social media sites like Facebook can pull you in and keep you there, whittling away hours. But it's inexcusable to think that a mother could put her personal entertainment ahead of the well being and lives of her children. People can cry addiction all they want, but really it's just pure out-and-out selfishness and neglect and so many other awful things.

Unfortunately, she's not the only one out there who has done so. If you remember, back in January Alexandra Tobias was charged with shaking her 3-month-old baby to death for interrupting her FarmVille game on Facebook. There are a smattering of other similar cases out there as well, which will likely only increase as more of our lives continue to be lived online.

Do you make a conscious effort to limit the amount of time you spend online?
