9-Year-Old Saves Baby Brother's Life

A little boy in Illinois may be getting extra dessert for a month after he saved his baby brother's life.

The mother stepped away from the boys for just a minute, and when she came back, her 2-year-old was in the pool and was blue. She called 9-1-1, but was just too panicked to perform CPR. Her son, who had just taken the class, was the only one cool enough to do it.

And so he did. But don't call him a hero.

"I mean, I wouldn't say I'm a hero because any other brother would do that for his brother," Logan Hearn told ABC7 Chicago.

That line made me cry because, as someone who is 8 years older than my only sibling, I know how hard it can be to be displaced by an adorable little toddler. The sibling relationship is so unique. I see it with my children all the time.

My 3.5-year-old daughter beats her brother up quite a bit, but when it's play time, she always wants him by her side. She reads to him and calls him "sweetie" and if anyone messes with him at the playground ...they better check themselves.

There's something so unique about that older sibling dynamic. It's so special and something I never could have described to anyone until I had my own children.

I loved my baby sister kind of the way I love my children. It was early, but it's the only kind of love it's comparable to -- that overwhelming I'll protect you, you drive me crazy, but I adore you kind of love.

I look at my kids and I see that same love and it makes me want to have more children. There is nothing like a sibling in the world. When I see the push/pull closeness my kids have, it makes me so happy. They fight and bicker, but in the end, when they're going to sleep, they read stories to each other and hold hands through my son's crib slats. I know she would jump in a pool to save him and vice versa.

What was your sibling relationship like?
