In the present day, movie theaters and our television screens have been flooded with '90s and '00s reboots. Some have been palatable, though most have us questioning why Hollywood would even tamper with our nostalgia gems. Welp, it appears another installment of a beloved action movie franchise is on the way. The Matrix is getting a fourth movie (yes, really), and even though it's great to hear some of the OGs are returning, a number of fans are left baffled with one question at the forefront of their minds.

  • Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are slated to star in the upcoming installment.

"We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana," Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, tells Entertainment Weekly about Matrix co-creator Lana Wachowski writing, producing, and directing the upcoming movie. "Lana is a true visionary -- a singular and original creative filmmaker -- and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe."

"Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now," Lana adds. "I'm very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends."

  • As a franchise, 'The Matrix' movies, as a collective, grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide.

Numbers on BoxOfficeMojo.com reveal on average, each of the three Matrix movies grossed over $544 million internationally which is a pretty big accomplishment. The franchise first kicked off in 1999 with The Matrix, where we met Keanu Reeves' character, Neo, who learned he's "the one" to stop the machines from basically using humanity as batteries whenever they please. That lead to The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, both released in 2003.

  • Although there aren't deets about what fans can expect, for the most part, folks are here for a fourth Matrix movie.

Aside from our love for Keanu Reeves (he really is a treasure we must protect at all costs), all three movies were pretty good. We can't think of this franchise without watching each of the films -- so hopefully the fourth Matrix will continue with this trend.

  • Others, however, have lots of questions considering both Neo and Trinity's characters definitely looked like they met their demise.

    Yeah ... about that.

Given 2003 has come and gone, here's a pretty big spoiler about The Matrix Revolutions: Trinity died taking Neo to Machine City (we saw him shed real tears, so we know it happened), and it definitely looked like Neo sacrificed himself to defeat all those Agent Smiths wreaking havoc, with the machines carrying his body off afterward.

  • We're curious to see how this all unfolds.

Given The Matrix got rebooted at the end of the third movie, Neo and Trinity could be somewhere together like "sike." Maybe they did die and get resurrected somehow.

That's actually not a bad name for the fourth movie: The Matrix Resurrected.
