13 Beloved Movies Headed to Broadway in 2019

Prequels, sequels, and reboots galore. The silver screen isn't safe from inevitable things like live-action remakes, but it seems that not even the stage can avoid reboots of the classics (and not so classic). Ever wanted to see a musical version of Beetlejuice? Welp, apparently, that's happening -- among a whole list of other movies and books that are getting stage-adapted spins -- which means we're getting a whole lot of Broadway shows. The world of theater is about to get a lot more movie-oriented. Obviously, this isn't a new occurrence (some might consider it an easy money-maker for a theater), but it is interesting.

Movies-turned-musicals are becoming more commonplace. Even Groundhog Day got its own musical (How? We still don't know.) Disney has sunk its teeth into Broadway, with Frozen, Aladdin, and The Lion King being just a few examples of successful stage remakes. There's plenty more where that came from, as more Disney movies are slated to stand center stage.

When there's already a script written, it's an easier task than making a story from the ground up. And it's a bonus for producers if the movie already has fans. There could be a lot of good that comes from the new wave of stage adaptations, but with less-than-heard of films -- like The Flamingo Kid -- some stage versions risk being flops.

Whether these hit or miss, here's a rundown 13 movies heading to Broadway in 2019, and for fun, seven film-based productions on a national tour lovers of the the-et-ah can enjoy now. (Do hurry, though, as the latter end their run in 2019!)

  • 'To Kill a Mockingbird'

Everyone's favorite book to read in grade school had its 1962 film adaptation -- and now, it's coming to Broadway on December 13, 2018! Previews are already happening!

  • 'The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical' Tour

While the 2010 movie version tanked, the Percy Jackson Musical is making huge leaps and bounds for its national tour, starting January 4, 2019.

  • 'Legally Blonde' Tour

That's right -- Elle's taking Broadway on a national tour ("what, like it's hard?"), beginning on January 22, 2019!

  • 'True West'

After its most recent film adaptation in 2016, the emotionally jarring True West has already begun its previews. Doors open for True West on January 24, 2019!

  • '13 Going on 30'

It's time to turn the clock forward! That way, when 13 Going on 30 hits Broadway on March 10, 2019, we won't have to wait!

  • 'Kiss Me, Kate'

From the musical that was based on The Taming of the Shrew, we all know and love the classic Kiss Me, Kate film. And now, the musical is making a comeback on Broadway. Previews start February 14, 2019, with an opening on March 14, 2019.

  • 'King Lear'

The original Shakespeare classic has had two screen adaptations within the past decade, but like a true Shakespeare work, it's heading to the Broadway stage on April 4, 2019, with previews starting on February 28, 2019.

  • 'Cinderella' Tour

We dreamed that Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella would have its own national tour -- and it came true! The tour has already begun, but it ends on April 14, 2019 (when the clock strikes 12!)

  • 'All My Sons'

This noir drama hit home across the US when it was adapted from its original play in 1947, so it was a given that it would eventually make a return to the stage. Debuting on April 22, 2019, previews start April 4, 2019.

  • 'Tootsie'

The 1982 comedy classic tells the story of an actor who pretends to be a woman so he can land a job -- and finds love along the way. Previews for Tootsie start March 29, 2019, and it opens on April 23, 2019.

  • 'Beetlejuice'

Don't say it three times! The Beetlejuice stage adaptation is set to debut at the Winter Garden Theatre on April 25, 2019. Previews start March 2019!

  • 'Glengarry Glen Ross'

The Al Pacino hit based on the 1984 Pulitzer Prize-winning play is making a comeback on Broadway at some point in May 2019. But get this: It's an all female revival!

  • 'Moulin Rouge!'

Come what may, Moulin Rouge! is taking Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on July 25, 2019 -- with previews starting on June 28, 2019!

  • 'Hello, Dolly!' Tour

Hello, national tour! Hello, Dolly! has recently begun its dance across America. But they won't go home until August 25th, 2019, when the tour ends!

  • 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' Tour

It seems like a work of pure imagination, but it's real! The classic Willy Wonka national tour is up and running, and ends on September 1, 2019.

  • 'Aladdin' Tour

The Aladdin cast is in for a whole new world! The national tour has already started, but the group may be coming to a theater near you, via magic carpet. The tour ends September 29, 2019!

  • 'Tina'

Tina Turner is getting another biographical adaptation -- this time, for Broadway. While the show may not follow the original biographical movie, What's Love Got to Do With It, the life and times of Tina Turner are sure to be seen. It's expected to arrive sometime in fall 2019.

  • 'Mean Girls' Tour

To top it all off, because Mean Girls is already a hit on Broadway, it's going on a nationwide tour -- starting in fall 2019!

  • 'Dreamgirls'

The tale of the R&B singing group is hitting Broadway theaters in 2019, though a release date hasn't been disclosed yet. We loved the musical in 1980, and the movie in 2006 was just as amazing!

  • 'The Secret Garden'

From the early 1900s classic book came several movie adaptations -- so the fact that it's being rebooted for the stage is no surprise! There's no set release date, but it's expected to come to Broadway next year.
