20 of the '90s Movie Remakes in the Works No One Asked For

Unfortunately, we have a seemingly unstoppable phenomenon going on in Hollywood right now -- and that's movie remakes. More and more, producers and directors are taking classic movies and TV shows and revamping them into either more modern versions or complete replicas. Sometimes they work, but more often than not ... they don't. There's an age-old proverb that says, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," and well, movie makers are just not listening. A lot of iconic movies come from the 1990s, and these are the ones that are starting to be quickly remade into lesser, modern versions. If we could stop this, we would, but it looks like we just might have to hope for the best.

Who knows, maybe something good will come from these updated versions. Reboots like IT, and most recently The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, found huge success. But unfortunately, this is rare in the world of remakes.

Due to re-castings, deviating story lines, or just plain poor quality, a lot of reboots and sequels flop BIG TIME. (We all remember what happened with Fuller House, right?) Sometimes we get our hopes up only to have them crushed. And other times, we get remakes that we never, ever wanted in the first place.

Why screw up a good thing?

So, as much as we wish this didn't happen, we know it will. Movie studios currently have a lot of '90s reboots in the works, and honestly, we aren't quite sure how we feel about it. And so, without further ado, take a look at 20 iconic movies and TV shows from the 1990s that are getting remakes or sequels.

  • 'Clueless'

Twenty-three years after it originally came out, Clueless is getting remade. This modern retelling of Jane Austen's Emma is about to get even more modern -- and we're hoping that Alicia Silverstone makes a cameo.

Because what's Clueless without an iconic "as if" from Cher herself?

  • 'Hocus Pocus'

Now this is a prime example of if something isn't broken ... don't fix it. A Hocus Pocus reboot is coming back as a TV movie, and it's unlikely that the original cast will make an appearance.

  • 'The Matrix'

OK, now this is one that just shouldn't be messed with. Fortunately, The Matrix isn't getting re-made, but the franchise is potentially getting a new movie.

(We have three, leave it alone.)

  • 'Home Alone'

Ryan Reynolds is reportedly re-vamping the holiday classic Home Alone, but it's going to be geared towards adult ... and might be called Stoned Alone.

(Yeah, there will likely be lots and lots of weed.)

  • 'First Wives Club'

The original 1996 movie is being turned into a half-hour series starring, Jill Scott and Michelle Buteau. It will follow a group of women who come together as their marriages come apart.

  • 'The Crow'

Said to be much more faithful to the original comic book from the '80s, The Crow remake is set to be released in October 2019. Jason Momoa was supposed to star in it, but has since dropped out -- so that should tell us something.

  • 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective'

Ace Ventura is coming back in either a TV series or a movie. But take comfort in the fact that it won't be an exact replica of the classic. MCEG President David Robinson told Deadline that it's going to be a "new movie in the spirit of the original."

  • 'Indecent Proposal'

This racy 1993 blockbuster is supposedly getting a remake that most likely won't involve the original stars, Robert Redford, Demi Moore, and Woody Harrelson.

  • 'Little Women'

This is one remake we actually know a lot about. Breakout star Timothee Chalamet will star alongside Meryl Streep and Emma Watson (and tons of others). The new Little Women is set to come out on Christmas Day 2019.

(As much as we love Meryl and the others, how many times are we going to see this movie reimagined?)

  • 'Starship Troopers'

This 1997 sci-fi film is being remade by the same writers of the Baywatch reboot. It's unsure when the new movie will come out, but none of the original cast will be making appearances.

  • 'Men in Black'

OK -- just no. Everyone is pretty much emotionally attached to Will Smith as the star of the Men in Black movies, but it looks like we are going to have to deal with a reboot -- starring Chris Hemsworth and Liam Neeson.

Yeah ... please just stick to the Marvel movies, Chris. We love ya in those.

  • 'The Mighty Ducks'

The Mighty Ducks is hitting TV! This isn't the first time the original film was rebooted. From 1996 to 2004, a reboot TV series aired on Disney, and now a new series is in development with ABC Signature studios.

TBH, who knows what will come of this.
  • 'The Craft'

Who doesn't love teen witches? This sequel is set to take place 20 years later. As of right now, there's no word on casting or release dates -- so we'll just have to wait to see what comes of this.

  • 'I Know What You Did Last Summer'

This cult favorite horror movie is being re-vamped, and while the reboot talks have been in the works for some time now, we still have no word on a release date.

  • 'The Witches'

Anjelica Huston starred in the 1990 original film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book, but sources close to Robert Zemeckis, the director of the new version, say it is going to stay more true to the novel. The original story line features a young boy who has a run-in with witches.

  • 'Leprechaun'

Why, why, why remake anything that had Jennifer Anniston in the original? As much as we'd like to stop this, the reboot of the '90s classic Leprechaun Returns is picking up 25 years where the first one left off -- and is coming soon.

  • 'Arachnophobia'

Anyone creeped out by spiders should proceed with caution. Steven Spielberg's '90s horror-comedy is set to be remade by executive producer Frank Marshall. It has no current release date.

  • 'Jacob's Ladder'

Fans were really hoping that Jacob's Ladder remake rumors weren't just going to go away ... but they didn't.

The reboot is reportedly hitting theaters in early 2019.

  • 'Big Trouble in Little China'

Technically, this film is from 1986, but is such a classic, we couldn't help but give it an honorable mention.

This one is set to be a sequel and not a remake. The new Big Trouble in Little China is going to pick up the story line from the original, so maybe we'll get to see the original cast.

... 'cause that's the only way we'll entertain this.

  • 'Cube'

This project is still "in development," so we don't know too much. The remake was reportedly put off for years, but the movie just recently got an official IMDb page, so does that make it real?
