the princess diariesIf there's one thing we've learned from decades of watching too many movies and too much TV, it's that no leading lady gets very far in this world without a trusty wingwoman (or wingman) by her side -- hence the current obsession with sensible and selfless sidekick Barb from Stranger Things. Just like Barb in her glasses and ruffled collar, we can think of multiple occasions when these so-called second fiddles stole the show!

Whether they're dispensing invaluable love advice or saving their pals from the meddlesome plans of rival forces, these are characters we'd be proud to call our BFFs. Click through our slideshow to get reacquainted with some truly unforgettable friends on film!

  • Vickie Miner from 'Reality Bites'

    1

As the wisecracking (and just plain wise) BFF of Leilana Pierce (Winona Ryder), Janeane Garofalo's Reality Bites character, Vickie Miner, was the epitome of sardonic, disillusioned '90s wit. Trademark quote: "Evian is naive spelled backward."

  • Janis Ian from 'Mean Girls'

    2

Lizzy Caplan's Janis Ian was everything the Mean Girls at school were not -- and, as such, she was everything newcomer Cady (Lindsay Lohan) needed in a friend. Trademark quote: "You smell like a baby prostitute."

  • Duckie from 'Pretty in Pink'

    3

Sure, Jon Cryer's Duckie wanted to be more than just a friend to Andie Walsh (Molly Ringwald), but he was still a pretty loyal sidekick. Trademark quote: "This is a really volcanic ensemble you're wearing."

  • Leah from 'Juno'

    4

A friend like Olivia Thirlby's character Leah is what every teen girl in the midst of a crisis -- like an unexpected pregnancy -- needs (who can forget her helpful suggestion to look for adoptive parents in the PennySaver?!). Trademark quote: "Maybe it's a food baby, did you have a big lunch?"

  • Tai from 'Clueless'

    5

Brittany Murphy's iconic and supremely lovable Tai gave the presumably superficial Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone) a conscience. Trademark quote: "College girls wear less makeup. That's why guys like them more."

  • Aldys from 'Never Been Kissed'

    6

Forced to go undercover as a high school student, reporter Josie Geller (Drew Barrymore) was saved from reliving her adolescent nerd nightmare by the friendship of smart girl Aldys (Leelee Sobieski). Trademark quote: "Oh my God, like, there goes another lemming!"

  • Paulette from 'Legally Blonde'

    7

Wacky nail technician Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge) was just the support system Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) needed to achieve her goal of becoming a successful lawyer despite the odds. Trademark quote: "I'm a middle-aged high-school dropout with stretch marks and a fat ass."

  • Doris from 'A League of Their Own'

    8

We'll never forget the incredible chemistry between Mae (Madonna) and Doris (Rosie O'Donnell) in A League of Their Own -- or how Doris could hilariously shut Mae down with one word. Trademark quote: "You think there are men who ain't seen your bosoms?"

  • Lilly Moscovitz from 'The Princess Diaries'

    9

It was a good thing Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) had pal Lilly Moscovitz (Heather Matarazzo) to remind her of who she was before her royal lineage was revealed! Trademark quote: "Lilly Moscovitz, official best friend of future queen. I don't like you."

  • Holly from 'The Wedding Singer'

    10

Without Holly (Christine Taylor) and her good-natured scheming, Robbie (Adam Sandler) and Julia (Drew Barrymore) might never have gotten together! Trademark quote: "Just because he's going out with me doesn't mean he's going to get laid ... all right, he probably will."

  • Fat Amy from 'Pitch Perfect'

    11

Proof that women of all sizes can and do slay, Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) accepted Beca (Anna Kendrick) even though she didn't fit the "perfect" mold. Trademark quote: "Even though some of you are pretty thin, you all have fat hearts, and that’s what matters."

  • Lydia from 'The Other Woman'

    12

Lydia (Nicki Minaj) was so much more than an assistant to Carly (Cameron Diaz) in The Other Woman -- she was a sharp-tongued source of sound advice. Trademark quote: "I'll tell you what my mother told me, and these are words to live by: Selfish people live longer."
