Shailene Woodley Is Happy That She Turned Down Anastasia Steele's Role

At least one actress has zero regrets about not being cast as Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey. Divergent star Shailene Woodley revealed she refused to audition for Fifty Shades long before Dakota Johnson scored the role -- and Jennifer Lawrence may have had something to do with that.

Woodley was reportedly offered the role of Christian Grey's mistress but rejected it because she had already signed on to another franchise -- and, as we're figuring out, working on Fifty Shades is quite the commitment for an actor. The 24-year-old actress confirmed via Gossip Cop that she was far more invested in another project than in taking on Steele: "It actually is true. I didn't want to audition for it. It's because I had already done Divergent and I knew there was no way I wanted to do multiple franchises at the same time because that's crazy, so I didn't see the point in it."

But wait. Her decision might have had a lot more to do with the actual Fifty Shades story -- though it was kind of her to lead with the scheduling conflict excuse. Here's another thing Woodley said: "I'd read the book and thought, 'If somebody can pull this off and make a movie out of it, they will be the biggest genius!'"

Ouch! Though, to be fair, she's sort of calling EL James and her team geniuses -- although it doesn't sound like she's the biggest fan of the trilogy, does it?

Now, here's where J.Law comes in: No, she didn't actually advise Woodley to turn down the role -- that would be too juicy a rumor. Woodley, who says she hasn't met Jen yet, wrote the Hunger Games star a letter asking for some fame advice. And this was Jen's perfect, perfectly J. Law response, as Woodley explains: "She was like, 'Small things will change, but if you stay who you are, nothing will change. The big picture won't change. It's only going to make your life greater and you'll be so grateful for it. Don't be stupid, don't make a sex tape, don't do drugs, don't go to Whole Foods the day the movie opens, and you'll be fine!'"

If Woodley is trying to follow in Lawrence's footsteps, it makes sense that she would avoid an overtly sexual role like that of Anastasia Steele. Then again, being tied up by Jamie Dornan on screen isn't hurting Dakota's career, is it? Fortunately for both talented actresses, each has carved out wildly successful career paths for themselves -- they just took different routes and roles to get to this point.
