'Fifty Shades Freed' Preview Reveals Christian's Past Will Haunt Him

The details surrounding Fifty Shades Darker remain, more or less, a big mystery, but here's some encouraging news: the third film in the Fifty Shades sequel is definitely happening. In fact, the synopsis for Fifty Shades Freed was recently released, and, as you may have predicted, Christian Grey's past is coming back to haunt him and Anastasia Steele.

The third and final book in EL James's trilogy depicts Anastasia and Christian as newlyweds returning from their honeymoon overseas. Like many newly married couples, they struggle with their joint life together, and Ana has to -- yet again -- deal with Christian's controlling behavior (did she honestly think that part of him would simply disappear when they exchanged vows)?

Anyway, the synopsis reveals the film probably won't stray too far from James's original text:

When unworldly student Anastasia Steele first encountered the driven and dazzling young entrepreneur Christian Grey it sparked a sensual affair that changed both of their lives irrevocably. Shocked, intrigued, and ultimately, repelled by Christian's singular erotic tastes, Ana demands a deeper commitment. Determined to keep her, Christian agrees.

Now, Ana and Christian have it all-love, passion, intimacy, wealth, and a world of possibilities for their future. But Ana knows that loving her Fifty Shades will not be easy, and that being together will pose challenges that neither of them would anticipate. Ana must somehow learn to share Christian's opulent lifestyle without sacrificing her own identity.

And Christian must overcome his compulsion to control as he wrestles with the demons of a tormented past. Just when it seems that their strength together will eclipse any obstacle, misfortune, malice, and fate conspire to make Ana's deepest fears turn to reality.

More from The Stir: 'Fifty Shades Freed' Might Be Made Into 2 Movies (Fingers Crossed!)

Although the summary doesn't make mention of him, we can expect
Jack Hyde (Anastasia's old boss) and Mrs. Robinson to reappear and shake things up. There's also Ana's pregnancy, the kidnapping of Mia Grey, and Christian's increasingly bizarre and psychotic controlling behavior to tackle in the third film.

Basically, it's the move where James will likely throw everything and the kitchen sink into the mix — I'm curious to see how she'll keep it under two hours with all the crazy that goes on in the novel. It seems like her only choice is to split the film into two separate movies, until she plans on cutting a lot of the action out, but the jury is still out about that one.

But there you have it: Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan will have their work cut out for them these next two years, as they prepare to reprise their roles in both Darker and Freed. Fans are being kept in the dark about a great number of details, but this just goes to show James and the writers and producers are hard at work behind the scenes.
