'Fifty Shades of Grey' Is Child's Play Compared to Highly Controversial New Book

fifty shades of greyIt was somewhat of a shock that a book like Fifty Shades of Grey was a best-seller -- bondage-themed novels typically don't get that honor, but Grey did and also inspired a movie and gained legions of fans. But that distinction may be beat by a new book that's even racier and more controversial that Fifty Shades. The author is also a woman -- Mylo Carbia -- and the subject matter is intense.

Carbia's novel is called The Raping of Ava DeSantis. It's already a best-seller and it's being called the book to read right now.

It's very different than Fifty Shades -- it's a horror novel, though it does explore BDSM. The main character, Ava, is college girl from New Jersey. She doesn't have a lot of money, and while in school in Atlanta she is raped by three rich frat boys. They pay her to keep quiet. Years later, she seeks revenge. Apparently that revenge is very violent as well. It's a taboo topic, and is written about with candor, and it's striking a chord with readers.

Not everyone is a fan, of course. But such is the way. EL James certainly will never be invited to Stephenie Meyer's house for dinner. But what I love about this is that women are writing novels that really get people talking -- there is a lot of buzz and interest, and it's clear we aren't afraid to tackle any subject, no matter how controversial or risqué. We are taking risks.

Maybe we wouldn't have gotten there if Fifty Shades of Grey wasn't the success story that it is. There certainly is room for more than one best-selling female author.
