'Fifty Shades Darker' Director Rumor Is a Disaster Waiting to Happen

Everyone associated with the Fifty Shades of Grey movie-making has made it clear that the films are an adaptation of the books. We also know that book's writer E.L. James and the film's director Sam Taylor-Johnson reportedly clashed quite a bit over the script. Taylor-Johnson isn't returning and now one of the names in the ring for who will direct Fifty Shades Darker is E.L. James herself! What?!

An insider told Hollywood Life that E.L. really wants to direct, but the studio isn't sold on the idea. I have to agree -- writing a book and directing a movie are two different crafts. I'm not saying she wouldn't make a great director, but is there too much risk in giving her a try? I'm inclined to say yes. Maybe James can work with the director more closely?

She is already working very closely with the screenwriter for the sequel -- it's her husband Niall Leonard. Too much? Perhaps. Which is why I would prefer someone else for the director role.

The insider did say that those that have the power with the sequel want a new person who works well with James (and Leonard), but that person would be a bit under the radar in order to keep costs down. I like those under the radar types because they tend to be quite innovative and willing to try new exciting things in filmmaking. There's a lot riding on this sequel ... and it HAS to be good. Or else ....

Do you think E.L. James would be a good choice for director? Or should they get new talent?
