According to sources with ties to the film who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, the ending was a point of contention between author EL James and director Sam Taylor-Johnson.

As you may recall from the book, the first novel ends right after Anastasia participates in a consensual spanking with Christian, but is disturbed by the experience and ends up leaving him, feeling she simply can't participate in the kind of relationship he wants.

But the film's original script, written by Kelly Marcel, called for the movie to end on just one final word: Ana saying, "Stop." The rewrite, written by Patrick Marber, had Ana saying, "Red," which is the couple's safe word. EL James reportedly favored the former, while Sam Taylor-Johnson advocated the latter. And in the end, it was the author who won.

So, we can safely assume the first flick ends mid-spanking when Ana cries out, "Stop!" and the second film, Fifty Shades Darker, will pick up somewhere in the aftermath of that moment, where Ana has left Christian because she simply cannot handle the arrangement he was vying for.

Of course, fans know this drama is just the start of Ana and Christian's love story. And it's one they'll get to see brought to life in its entirety over the course of two more installments now. Hot!

Now that we know the final word of the film, what do you guess the scene will be like? How 'bout the opening of Fifty Shades Darker?
