Shocking 'Gone Girl' Sex Scene Involved the Weirdest Prep Ever (VIDEO)

Rosamund Pike Gone Girl sex scene

Did you know that gruesome sex scene between Rosamund Pike and Neil Patrick Harris in Gone Girl was shot 36 times? THIRTY-SIX TIMES. Notorious perfectionist director David Fincher said he told them to rehearse it for three days, and the gory moment was finally shot with "36 sheets, 450 gallons of blood, and 36 pairs of underpants.” As for how Pike actually prepared for this grueling, repetitive job — let’s just say she got very inventive.

Pike visited The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday and she discussed the difficulty of rehearsing such a difficult scene:

Neil and I were kind of left alone on the soundstage for a considerable amount of time, but David sort of, really, would have had us doing it all day and all night and ... you get into the Fincher mindset and you think, 'Maybe I haven't done enough rehearsal,' And so I went home and I thought, 'Well, I could ask my husband to kind of do this with me,' and I was like, 'No, I think that would be weird.’

So I went down to CVS. I was driving home from set one night and I went into CVS and I found this, this Dora the Explorer felt doll. And I thought, 'Well, I could kind of use that.' But she wasn't tall enough. She had to kind of be as tall as Neil Patrick Harris.

I’m not sure it would have occurred to me that a Dora the Explorer doll could be used for this purpose, but that’s probably why Rosamund Pike is an Oscar-nominated actress and I’m not. Pike stuck the doll to a wooden post in order to bring the scene to life, and then she ... uhhhhhh, “helped Dora find her map.”

Then I practiced the scene at home, by the swimming pool. We rent a house in the [Hollywood] Hills, which is one of those houses which ... feels very private but in fact is overlooked by a lot of other houses. So, if anyone's actually looking over at the house that morning, they would have seen me do highly inappropriate things to this Dora the Explorer doll.

If that’s not weird enough, Pike also got ready for the scene by hacking into a dead pig:

If you’re going to do something like that, you have to do it with a certain degree of accuracy. I had no idea how much force you needed to slice someone’s throat. I actually went to a butcher and asked them if they wouldn’t mind me just using a box cutter on a pig carcass, just to understand what it would be like. They let me do it, so anyone buying meat that day would have seen me behind the counter, with serious intent, finding out the mechanics of doing that. That was purely for research purposes.

I have to hand it to her, she was very dedicated about making things look as real as possible. As you know if you saw the movie, her hard work definitely paid off — I know my jaw pretty much hit the floor when Amy went all praying mantis on Desi. Bravo to Rosamund Pike for her incredibly bizarre yet surprisingly effective role preparation.
