'Magic Mike 2' Makes Heartbreaking Beefcake Announcement (VIDEO)

Magic Mike 2 Matthew McConaughey

Bad news, everyone who greatly enjoyed Matthew McConaughey crooning "Ladies of Tampa" in Magic Mike. And also the parts of the movie when he wore a cowboy hat and a thong. And the part when he taught Alex Pettyfer's character to grind in front a mirror. And -- well, let me cut to the chase: sadly, it has been confirmed that McConaughey will not be returning to the Magic Mike franchise. I KNOW, right? Let us all bow our heads and observe a moment of silence for Dallas, the strip-club owner who gave us the fantastic line, "Fact is, the law says you cannot touch! But I think I see a lotta lawbreakers up in this house tonight ..."

The only silver lining to this incredibly upsetting news comes in the form of a tweet about Magic Mike 2 from actor Joe Manganiello.

The director of Magic Mike 2 (which I guess is actually called Magic Mike XXL) confirmed that filming for the sequel began at the beginning of September, and it’s been set for a July 1 release. Gregory Jacobs says the follow-up to the 2012 hit won't be a cookie-cutter remake:

It’s road trip movie and put it this way, it’s different enough that once you see it you’ll understand why we made a sequel. No one will be accusing us of making the same movie twice.

Unfortunately, that also means McConaughey won't be revisiting his role as strip club entrepreneur. I guess I'm not hugely surprised by this announcement, given the fact that there's a different storyline and McConaughey's career is hotter than Georgia asphalt these days. He's currently filming Gus Van Sant’s new drama, The Sea of Trees, which likely took priority over the Magic Mike project.

Still, I'm looking forward to this sequel because Channing Tatum has said "it will essentially be the movie that everyone thought the first one was going to be: crazy and fun and less slice-of-life and less drama.” Not that I have any problem with drama in my movies, but I felt like the balance between Soderbergh's grittiness and OMG MALE STRIPPERS WOO! was way off in the first film.

Plus, remember how hot Joe Manganiello was in the first Magic Mike?

Well, here's what he tweeted recently:

Dude, he's getting even more ripped for the sequel. Are the tickets for this gun show available for presale because I AM READY TO BUY.

Still, it's a bummer we won't see Matthew McConaughey wearing that leather vest again. For old time's sake, here's Dallas taking it all off onstage, rated-R-style:
